Muddy Waters

“Muddy Waters” is a green-when-ripe variety with purple shoulders, developed by Tom Wagner from a line called “Searching for the Blue Zebra,” which involved a cross with P20 Blue (information from a tomato database). I have seen at least three versions of this, all called “Muddy Waters.” All three are green when ripe. One has stripes and purple shoulders. Another has stripes and no purple. The last, which is what mine appear to be, have no stripes but do have purple shoulders. This is a developing line, and I do not know the generation of my original seeds or of those I have now.
The memorable thing about Muddy Waters is the flavor. I am not alone in stating that it is one of the best tasting anthocyanin varieties I have tried, and also one of the best tasting green-when-ripe varieties I have tried (excepting Aunt Ruby’s German Green, which beats every GWR in my own flavor preference). An added bonus, which I did not see the first time I grew it in a 3 gal pot, was the remarkable productivity. This year I grew Muddy Waters in a 7 gallon pot and it was a little fruit machine, producing small to medium beefsteaks into the heat of June most impressively. From my tasting notes: “flesh is plump, turgid and tender; taste is clean, fresh, sweet, and tomatoey.” The only thing that keeps me from marking it as an “Ellie’s WOW! variety” is that it is still a developing line, so I can’t be sure that the flavor and productivity will stay the same. They were the same for me in two generations of growing.

Currently, processing times are 5 to 10 business days. USPS is also experiencing delays and can take much longer than usual for deliveries. Thank you for your patronage and patience during this extra busy time! – Ellie, Ted, and Steve Dismiss
