Seed time, who is your recommended seed supplier(s)?!
Looking for general input from the community on who you order seeds from, yes I know many of you will do you own seed stock or trade with neighbors, but I want to know if you want to order some seeds who you find to have a superior product at a good price. Also if someone knows a good cheap supplier of seed starting stuff that would be awesome.
Is there a seed bank in your area? I always start there. My city’s seed bank specializes in native plants, which is valuable when you’re trying to grow things in the desert.
If not, Burpee has a nice selection, and they’re pretty reasonably priced. I’ve bought from them a few times, and have always had good results with their seeds.
I live in Southern California, a quick search is telling me the only seed banks around here are for cannabis. :-/
I order from Baker Creek, Sustainable Seed Company, High Mowing Seeds, Botanical Interests, Seed Savers Exchange, and Johnnys. I order exotic heirlooms from Baker Creek and bulk from High Mowing Seeds. All of the others have a great selection as well. If you are in the continental US High Mowing seeds is offering free shipping with no minimum purchase. I also use r/seedswap often. I have an extensive collection of saved seeds but I am a bit of a seed addict and like to try out new things so I browse these seed sellers websites and catalogs.
We pretty much use our saved seeds now but we still order from:
For herbs- horizonherbs.com For veggies and other stuff- anniesheirloomseeds.com heirloomseeds.com
They seem to have pretty good pricing and we receive our order in a timely manner.
I second Baker Creek I have been a loyal customer for years, plus you can save heirloom seeds. Sow True Seed is also a great source for heirloom seeds. Local seed banks are also an amazing resource. In my city, the seed bank is housed at the Cooperative Extension office and at the farmers market. It is wonderful because as stated by rachelofthedesert, they specialize in varieties that are native to the area or at least well adapted. Seed banks are also a great way to share seeds from your own garden and build knowledge and community. Happy growing and don’t forget to save your seeds!
