Cannabis seed hunter dies

Goodbye to Franco Loja, a Strain Hunter

The activist of Italian origin has died at 42 years of age. He was collaborating in a project against malaria, a disease that paradoxically took his life.

The Green House team paid a tribute to him on their web and Facebook page to Franco: “Franco is an icon and helped change so many people lives. He will deeply be missed as a brother, father, son, friend and so much more”.

Franco Loja began working at Green House Seed in 2000, one of the most awarded seed companies in the world. For more than a decade he was in charge of selecting the best genetics of marijuana to produce their seeds.

Franco Loja, the Strain Hunter

In 2007, he began the video series Strain Hunters with Arjan Roskam. They travelled around the world looking for the rarest varieties of marijuana in order to produce new crosses. Their YouTube channel reached 60,900 subscribers.

Franco Loja was a recognised personality of the cannabis world. He also wrote in several media and blogs of the sector. And his Instagram account counted on more than 100,000 followers, where he published images and videos about his travels.

From Yes We Skunk, we want to pay a small tribute to Franco with this article and we offer our condolences to his family and friends.

“Cannabis is my passion, my bread, my home. I feel it is my duty to make sure this amazing plant is preserved and enjoyed. I am a smoker, a grower, a breeder, and a strain hunter. For life.”

On 2 January 2017 an official notice from Green House Seeds informed us that Franco Loja, one of the members and breeders of Strain Hunters, had died at 42.

GH was awarded many times at different events, developing tens of strains while running their Coffee Shops in Amsterdam. In 2008 they founded the Strain Hunters collective.

SH developed a series of documentaries about landrace varieties and cannabis cultivation all over the world, visiting exciting places like Morocco, Colombia, Congo, the Caribbean. Franco and Arjan filmed hundreds of cannabis plants on their natural environment, meeting farmers and telling us the main aspects of cannabis cultivation in each country. They also developed an interesting range of Strain Hunters seeds, offering new genetics that represented the different expeditions in one way or another.

Franco was a great traveller, he was constantly moving from one place to another, and it was not strange to see him visiting farms in Canada, sleeping in an African taxi and relaxing in some club in Barcelona in the same week.

He was a very active member of the cannabis community, always ready to share a good joint and information at the countless fairs and events that he attended. For this reason Franco had lots of friends and fans, humbly sharing his passion with anyone ready to spend some minutes with him.

Franco died of Malaria on the 2nd of January while he was coming back from a trip to Africa, where he had been doing CBD extractions. We had the luck and pleasure to know him and work together, so we are deeply sorry for this loss and would like to express our condolences to his family, friends and partners.

A Tribute to Franco Loja, the Strain Hunter

You didn’t have to know Franco Loja personally to have liked him or to have felt the waves of his life’s work. When news came last week that Loja had died at the untimely age of 42, the cannabis world responded shock and sadness. He was researching the benefits of CBD for patients with malaria when he also contracted the disease while in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Loja leaves behind the seeds of his legacy. Partner to Arjan Roskom of Green House Coffeehouse & Seed Company in Amsterdam, he helped raise numerous genetics taken from around the world. His travels, documented in the series “Strain Hunters,” allowed many to feel like they knew him without ever meeting him personally.

Our very own Anna Wilcox had the chance to meet Loja firsthand in Amsterdam while documenting the Cannabis Cup back in 2013. Since then, we’d kept in contact with Loja over the years. He was always willing and excited to share his expertise for Leafly articles, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him, if only for a short time.

As we mourned together over the news of loss, members of Leafly and our sister companies had only wonderful things to say about Loja; that he was polite, respectful, intelligent, and, of course, passionate. He had as much love to give his fellow humans as he did the cannabis plant itself.

A condolences page has been set up by Green House Seeds so others can share their thoughts and memories of Loja. Today, we remember him fondly and celebrate his lifetime of service to cannabis and to the wellbeing of people around the world. He will be missed by so many, and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.
