How to collect kief
The best way to collect kief is to use a 4 piece grinder with kief catcher. All of the best grinders have a special compartment at the very bottom for collecting kief. You simply place your buds in the uppermost chamber where the teeth are and turn the grinder repeatedly. As it breaks up the buds they fall onto a middle layer with a screen and any loose pollen crystals, or kief, fall through the screen and into the kief catcher. Over time the kief builds up and you can collect it.
The photo above shows the bottom compartment with kief in it. Some people choose to store a couple buds in the compartment so that the kief will stick to them, which can also be seen in the photo above. How you use yours is up to you, but thats how to get kief!
A couple more tips.
If kief is what you want, there’s a couple of ways to maximize your yield. This is handy when making pressed hash, or for THC budgeting/party smoking.
Ground – When grinding your herbs, keep the grinder upside down for the first few turns. This is to ensure your herbs are ground completely (NOTE: this does not produce optimal smoking consistency, it creates a powdery herb that dries quickly and compresses easily, very bad to roll, very good for kief). Make sure you keep a good grip on the lid from the bottom. If you slip your grinder will open and your herbs will scatter. Magnetic grinders are very helpful in this spot.
Coinage – Take a (lucky) coin and drop it in your herb collection chamber (middle tray). After you’ve ground your herbs, shake the grinder in a circular motion, sliding the coin around the bottom. It will easily roll around the inside of the grinder, sliding across your kief screen. This technique pushes more kief crystals through the screen, and agitates the ground herbs to release more ‘pollen’. Larger heavier, non-serrated coins are preferred. Dollar coins work well.
Clean your coin with a dot of dishsoap. Oils on the coin will bind with the kief and make it useless and more keif will stick to the coin itself. These are both bad things.
Tap – After all’s said and done, the last trick is to tap your grinder flat against a table or your leg or palm. the blunt impact loses kief caught in the screen and collects your kief neatly in the tray. This also helps avoid forming grommets of sticky press-hash around the lip of your grinder over time, which make it harder to open and close.
Just one more.
Freeze – Freezing your herb for a half an hour before grinding will also help kief detach. Freezing the THC does not affect it’s effect, however it will change the way the herb smokes.
these are all great ideas, except, why dont you just use the grinder like normal and wait until you have a good amount of keif. the more THC you take out of the herb in the initial grind, the less potent it is.

It all boils down too the grower’s abilities. Where, it came from, where it’s smoked, and what you think about it compared too others means about as much as goose shit on a pinecone.

But i think putting your herb in the grinder does decrease the potency of it a lot. If you don’t smoke a lot on the daily you wont really notice but if you smoke 2-5 grams on the daily like i do then you definitely will notice

No matter where you live, if you have a good hook-up it’s either from an experienced local grow or getting shipped in (unless you are fortunate enough to live in cali, colorado, oregon, etc.) from the medical clubs. Accessibility will certainly differ as a result of many factors including distance from the original source, change in price, and more, but it mostly comes down to knowing where to look. People want good weed, so good weed is everywhere.

I have a small stiff bristle brush that came with an electric razor. I use this on my grinder from time to time to sweep the upper and middle chambers clean.

Seattle has the best bud in the country, I’ve known people and still do know people from Cali that would even voulch for me. We have the best
growers out here and our climate is great. Nearly everyone I know on the Seattle area smokes bud, and we have over 1 million people attend Hempfest a year. We are also one of the states with medical marijuana dispenseries. It’s very unusual to find bam in the Northwest.

most of the bud from BC doesnt stay in BC majority of it ends up in the States and some goes east to Ontario and Quebec mostly and then the remainder they keep for themselves
BC bud is great stuff, a lot of it is comparable to mid-shelf dispensary stuff but for a fraction of the price. If you know the right people you can get great strains for 6 bucks a gram.

I’ll admit Cali bud is superior to what I’ve tried elsewhere in the States, but it doesn’t even compare to some of the hash we get in Europe. D00DS///… Here in Chicago they grow some of the best bud ever, super bionic crystal chronic and poop on a stick! I aint never seen so many crystals as super bionic crystal chronic. This stuff is actually a light green color underneath the 2-3 mm coating of crystal goo! You gotta scrape that goo off with a dental pick, its some sort of plant resin that dries and turns to hash. Its like the plants are drenched in honey oil resin sap! Even when this bud is cured from the dealer, you can’t really roll joints, you could press a piece to the wall and it would stick and when you pull it back off there’d be a golden stain!
Then theres “poop on a stick.” This one can be deceiving! This stuff looks like the some crappy brow seedless but compressed brick weed where you’re thinking: I just got burn’t, this looks like some total “last resort” ditch weed, some real “brown frown”. But then you smoke it. It has an old and deceptively familiar taste right in line with its appearance. You assume: maybe better luck next time. Then about 10 minutes later, you realize you’re sitting there baked, staring at otherwise white wall, but seeing fluctuating multicolored tv static, and distracted by demon like whispering voices that quietly ramble a jumbled cacophany mishmash of your innermost fears and dreams while you feel like your head has lost all its 3 dimensionality as it noisily vibrates and grinds down to a flat two dimensional plane making sounds similar to a world war I era biplane doing upside down acrobatic dogfight fly by loop de loops with no muffler on the engine. The grinders work great at what they do and they don’t discriminate against the green they mulch or the pollen they collect. My personal tip for the pollen is to use one or two copper coins in the screen. Copper isn’t going to have a problem getting stuck to the magnet. Light enough that a gentle shake will make it bounce against the screen and maximize pollen collection.
Its not where the green is grown, it is WHO grows it. You can get seeds from all over the world, and if you’re growing skills suck, your green sucks!
